Overview
Outside the Boxes was a weekend experiential retreat designed specifically for queer, trans, and nonbinary bodies — the first programs of its kind produced under the Body Electric School. Developed in response to demand for queer-centered and trans- and nonbinary-inclusive somatic programming within an established embodiment education lineage, the retreat offered a fully immersive weekend container integrating movement, conscious touch, creative expression, and community building. Zed served as co-producer and lead facilitator across four instances in three cities between 2011 and 2013, and received the Body Electric School’s Program Development Excellence Award in 2012 for this work.
Contributions
- Co-developed the retreat curriculum and facilitation framework from scratch as a new program within the Body Electric School
- Co-produced and co-facilitated 4+ instances across San Francisco, Philadelphia, and New York over two years
- Managed all production logistics for each instance including venue sourcing and contracts, participant intake, marketing, and materials
- Designed print and digital promotional materials for each city and instance
- Coordinated participant communications, registration, and sliding-scale pricing accessibility
- Contributed to establishing queer-centered somatic programming as a sustained offering within the Body Electric lineage
Outcome
Outside the Boxes became one of the Body Electric School’s most recognized programs for queer communities, earning the Program Development Excellence Award in 2012 and running for four instances across three cities — directly influencing the curriculum and community that Zed brought to Body Trust Circle when co-founding that organization in 2014.
